The estimated prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States

Project Overview

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. It is called a \"spectrum\" disorder because it can range from mild to severe and can affect individuals in different ways.

The exact cause of autism is not known, but research suggests that it is likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

In this study using Power BI, available data from different data sources. I did make a data summary in order to address the following KPI of Autism Prevalence in the USA. Using Data from National Center for Health Statistics, the population from US Census Bureau, and other sources. I will give a report on the estimated prevalence of autism spectrum disorder in the USA and compare it with the population and generate information on the economic impact.

Problem Statement

My study analyzed the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States from 2000 to 2020. The results show that ASD has consistently increased during this period, from an estimated 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 54 in 2020. The highest increase occurred in 2008 due to a change in diagnostic criteria. Additionally, for every female with ASD, there are four males with the disorder. These findings are important for understanding the distribution and trends of ASD in the country. In addition, the total population increase year to year was less and or equal to the Autism (ASD) Population increase for every year. This indicates a potential economic development factor as services needed for ASD are not cheap.

Executive Summary

From 2000 to 2020, the prevalence of autism in the United States has shown a significant increase. Various studies and data sources indicate a consistent rise in the number of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during this period. In 2000, the estimated prevalence of ASD in the U.S. was approximately 1 in 180 children. However, by 2020, the prevalence had risen to around 1 in 54 children, reflecting a substantial increase over the two decades. This upward trend in autism prevalence highlights the growing recognition and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as potential factors contributing to its occurrence. Further research is necessary to fully understand the reasons behind this rise and to develop effective strategies for support and intervention.

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaway – Negative Insight. The Extend of the negative, in 2020 the number of ASD in New Jersey increased by 8.75% compared to 2019. In 2019 the increase was only 1.44% compared to the previous year (2018).

Next Steps

1. The data shows that the Autism (ASD) population in the USA from 2000 to 2020 has been on an increase. To address the increased awareness and education: There is a need to increase awareness and understanding of autism, its signs and symptoms, and how to support individuals with autism. This can be achieved through educational programs in schools, workplaces, and communities.

2. The increase in ASD year by year is not consistent across every state & District of Columbia. The data shows for the year 2020 the average ASD increase Year over Year was 5.3% total population increased by 0.98%. The state with the highest increase of ASD for the same period was New Jersey at 8.75% and the lowest (which was a decrease in the District of Columbia at -1.22%.). The one factor of inconsistency (see data in Pop YoY%) however, the other reason is a lack of awareness and diagnosis. It would be a great idea to improve the use and invest in a standardized approach across every state and region to get better accurate information diagnosis about ASD to get accurate ASD Prevalence information.

3. The data shows that for every 1 female exists 4 males with ASD. It could be a great idea to undertake further research on this fact and further understand autism (ASD). The data on ASD Prevalence does show a massive increase and if this data is the tip of the iceberg Further research is needed to better understand its causes, risk factors, and effective treatments.

4. Overall the total population increase per year is less than the ASD per year increase eg. In 2020 the total population increased by 0.98% while the ASD population increased by 5.3%. This is another piece of information regarding the economic factor in the country as the ASD current services needed are quite expensive and some services are not covered by insurance (it is out of pocket) This is a fact based on my own experience with the issue. With time more cases would exist with a smaller population to take care of them.

5. The data indicates the importance & challenges (based on the number increase) Addressing autism prevalence in the US requires a multi-faceted approach that includes increased awareness and education, early detection and diagnosis, access to evidence-based interventions, employment opportunities and accommodations, research, and support for caregivers.
