Project Overview

The dataset consists of transactional data collected in 6 years (period 2014-2019), indicating date and time of sale, pharmaceutical drug brand name and quantity sold , exported from Point-of-Sale system in the individual pharmacy. Selected group of drugs is classified to the following Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification System categories:
M01AB - Anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids, Acetic acid derivatives and related substances
M01AE - Anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids, Propionic acid derivatives
N02BA - Other analgesics and antipyretics, Salicylic acid and derivatives
N02BE/B - Other analgesics and antipyretics, Pyrazolones and Anilides
N05B - Psycholeptics drugs, Anxiolytic drugs
N05C - Psycholeptics drugs, Hypnotics and sedatives drugs
R03 - Drugs for obstructive airway diseases
R06 - Antihistamines for systemic use
The Project analyzes the best performing drug in terms of sales by doing a sales analysis on Month over Month and Year over Year basis.

Problem Statement

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the biggest and most powerful in the world, generating a staggering amount in revenue and sales. These pharmaceutical statistics showed that this industry has no intention of slowing down even in the face of stricter government controls and price hikes. There will always be a demand for pharmaceuticals. And as people age and new outbreaks and diseases emerge, the chances are that this trillion-dollar market will only get bigger. Sales of drugs in the US made up 47% of the global market for pharmaceuticals. According to the pharmaceutical industry statistics, in 2018, emerging markets accounted for 21%, and Europe made up 20% of the worldwide market. Not only did the US spend $485 billion on pharmaceuticals in 2018, but pharmaceutical expenditure is also projected to go as high as $655 billion by 2023. Not surprising, considering that prescription drugs account for around 15% of total healthcare expenditure in the US.
