HIV TRENDS AMONG CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AGED 0-19, IN SUBSAHARAN AFRICA, 2000 - 2020

Project Overview

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) – is caused by a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If not treated or treatment is not properly adhered to it can lead to AIDS(Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome).
HIV can be transmitted through sex, sharing needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment, and mother-to-child transmission. Much efforts have been made to promote prevention of HIV; use of condoms, management and attaining viral suppression among those infected, not sharing sharp objects, the use of post-exposure prophylaxis, and more recently the use of PREP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis).
The purpose of this project is to highlight the HIV incidence and mortality rates among children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, where a majority of them reside.

Problem Statement

Imagine being born with a chronic condition, and the need to be under lifelong therapy. To some, they may feel different from their non-HIV-infected peers. This project provides an in-depth look into the data on HIV-infected children aged 0-19 majority of who majority were born with the infection.

HIV is one of the world\'s serious public health concerns. Globally, there were approximately 38 million people living with HIV in the year 2020, of these approximately 3.7 million were children and adolescents aged between 0-19 years. Despite recent progress towards ending the HIV pandemic, the insight from our data suggests that the efforts towards ending the HIV pandemic are varied by country, some countries are progressing well, and are on track to meet the targets, however, these efforts are negatively affected by other countries which have slow to negative progression towards ending the HIV pandemic. This calls for a pause and re-evaluation of strategies in place, why are others being left behind in this fight? Are we on the right track?
