New York City HIV Diagnoses and Deaths

Project Overview

In June of 1981 a disease of epic proportions ascended upon the United States and would go on to become one of the most ravaging epidemics in the United States’ history. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has taken the lives of over 700,000 people in the U.S. alone and more than 35,000 people are affected each year. Even until this day, HIV continues to have a disproportionate impact on certain populations, particularly racial and ethnic minorities, gay and bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women. This project will explore how the HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected the city of New York and its’ five boroughs during the years 2011-2015 and the analysis of the data is further categorized by United Hospital Fund Neighborhoods. The dashboard highlights the following KPIs:

New cases per Year - estimated number of people 13 years of age or older living with diagnosed HIV infection (PLWDHI) per 100 NYC population using annual intercensal population estimates.

New Cases YoY % - the number of HIV diagnoses 13 years of age or older on a yearly basis, including those concurrent with AIDS, excluding people known to have been diagnosed outside of NYC per 100,000 population divided by the previous year.

New Case/Death Ratio % - the number of HIV diagnoses 13 years of age or older on a yearly basis, including those concurrent with AIDS, excluding people known to have been diagnosed outside of NYC per 100,000 population divided by the total number of deaths from any cause among people with HIV/AIDS 13 years of age.

Problem Statement

In 2015, an estimated 39,393 people in the United States were diagnosed with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. About 1 in 7 people with HIV in the United States do not know that they are infected. In 2015, an estimated 3,123 adults and adolescents were diagnosed with HIV in New York. New York ranked 4th among the 50 states in the number of HIV diagnoses in 2015. Although the number of new HIV infections in New York State has declined by over 40 percent in the last decade, there have been more people living with HIV each year, since deaths have fallen to even lower levels than infections. This project will explore how the HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected the city of New York and its’ five boroughs during the years 2011-2015 and the analysis of the data is further categorized by United Hospital Fund Neighborhoods.
