NYC Traffic Accidents (2016 - 2021)

Project Overview

New York City is the most populated city in the United States – and it’s got the traffic to prove it. According to U.S. News and World Report, NYC ranks 4th for the worst traffic in the nation. There is no surprise to this, as heavily congested roads in a densely populated area result in a lot of traffic accidents. However, analysis shows in 2020, the year of a raging pandemic, reported collisions declined by 46%. So, despite the fact that NYC came to a near-halt in 2020, there was still an average of 303 car accidents on the city’s streets every single day which continuously lead to increase in number of people killed and injured in motor vehicle accidents. This project aim to analyze Motor Vehicle Collisions Data retrieved from all police reported motor vehicle collisions in NYC in order to inform NYC Public Safety Department, government agencies as well as the public on trends and possible causes of this Motor Vehicle Collisions and proffer actionable solutions to prevent and reduce accidents to barest minimum. To achieve this, the following KPI was analyzed; Collisions Per Day, Percentage YoY Collisions, Percentage YoY Killed and Percentage YoY Unsafe Behavior.

Next Steps

Analysis shows that despite low collisions rate been experienced in 2020, thanks to the raging pandemic year, the rate at which people are killed through Motor Vehicle Collisions is still high and alarming. Accident do not just happen, they are caused by people unsafe behaviors. I therefore recommend the following measures;

1. Public Safety Department should emphasize on Unsafe Behavior and organize trainings to promote safe behaviors for road users while applying for drivers license across the city.

2. Data shows that Unsafe Speed causes the highest percentage of death. Therefore, there should be an increased presence of Law Enforcement on the roads to curb over speeding and enforce speed limit.
