Project Overview

In any organization, the sales department plays a pivotal role in the success of the business. The first line on any income statement or profit and loss statement deals with revenue. Total sales or statistics focuses on the actual amount of revenue rendered, which makes it an essential indicator of a healthy business.

This Dashboard shows number of Total Sales conducted among 45 given stores. It shows a comparison of sales by month, Holiday Seasons, and Unemployment rate. It further analyzes sales performance throughout the given report period; based on percentage YOY Sales, and the impact of prevailing consumer price index.

Problem Statement

According to NYSE_WMT_2012 Walmart U.S. achieved positive comparable store sales for fiscal 2012, having posted an increase in customer traffic for the fourth quarter. Net sales surpassed $264 billion, increasing 1.5 percent, while operating income grew to $20.4 billion, a 2.2 percent increase from the prior year. This report could serve as a benchmark for the 45 randomly selected stores, that are assessed in this project. Overall, these stores have registered a decrease in year over year average sales by 0.54%, which is way lesser than the average year over year consumer price index increase of 0.99%, hence putting profitability in question.

Suggestions

1. Being friendly with customers- In today’s world, everyone is running after gaining quality experiences instead of worldly things. Thus, to stand out, Walmart needs to provide an enhanced Customer Experience to be remembered for the long term. This can be achieved by hiring and developing employees who can provide exceptional customer experiences. A 2% increase in customer retention is the same to profits as cutting costs by 10%. Stores 35 and 36 are the least performing out of the 45 stores according to the data, and I would suggest these stores should gear up with a new management that can assure better and consistent control of business to regulate successful working practices.

2. Ensure all Walmart stores show up in online search results- When a business has a digital presence, it makes it much easier for customers to easily find it. Often, a customer will turn to the internet when looking for a company or a product. Although Stores 35 and 36 are not located in areas where high unemployment rate is recorded, they have the highest decline of YOY Sales (10.73% and 13.89%) for the years 2011 and 2012. Putting them on the map to make sure customers do visit would have an impact to bring Sales up.
