NBA Per Game Stat Trends 2003-2020

Project Overview

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in North America. The league is composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada) and is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. It is the premier men\'s professional basketball league in the world.

The NBA\'s regular season runs from October to April, with each team playing 82 games. The league\'s playoff tournament extends into June.

In basketball there are many KPIs used to measure the performance of players and teams. Three of these KPIs are Points Per Game, Assists Per Game and Rebounds Per Game.

My Project overviews the rate of change of the three KPI’s over a period starting from the 2003 season up to the 2020 season.

The purpose of my dashboard is to show how NBA teams performed over the period from the 2003-2020 season on the three major KPIs namely Point Per Game(PPG), Assist Per Game(APG) and Rebound Per Game(RPG). The dashboard can be used by researchers, commentators and sport journalists for research purposes and sources of information.

Problem Statement

The NBA saw a 37% decline in ratings from the 2019 playoffs to the 2020 playoffs. Also NBA revenue slipped from $8.8 billion in 2018-19 to $8.3 billion for the 2019-20 season. Although a part of this decline is attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams scoring low points per game and less interesting games, plays a great deal for the decline in rating and resulting in revenue decline.

This dashboard is aimed at showing how NBA teams performed over the period from the 2003-2020 season based on the three major KPIs namely Point Per Game(PPG), Assist Per Game(APG) and Rebound Per Game(RPG). It shows how the rate of this three KPI’s changed over the years.

Next Steps

Suggestions

The NBA makes money primarily through television, merchandising, sponsorships, and tickets.
According to Forbes, total revenue across the organization reached $8.76 billion in the 2018-19 season. Each one of the teams is worth at least $1 billion, and a team is worth on average $2.12 billion—about 14% higher than the 2017–18 season.

And this happened mainly because games have been more exciting to watch with growing number of points scored per game.

As can be seen from the dashboard the overall positive growth trend in the three KPI’s of the charts, NBA teams are becoming more efficient in their offense and defense. This helps the games to be more competitive and add to the entertainment value of NBA. That in turn increases the fan base of the teams and NBA in USA and Canada where the teams are located and globally.

Maintaining this positive growth is the key hence, there are a few things that could be done.

Studies shows that the NBA is set to make changes to attract larger number of fans by increasing the speed and pace of the game and allowing a better flow of the game. This focus, while on value creation for spectators, provided the league with larger pool of talented players that could effectively deliver such value to fans. For this reason, new rules that encourages offensive players will greatly contribute to the goal of increased points and making the league more exciting
Working on creating next generation offensive players serves the purpose
Teams must also need to be equally matched instead of the bigger-market teams having two or three superstars while other teams have none
