Project Overview

This project aims at shining some light on factors that cause Flight Delays and Cancellations thereby negatively affecting customer satisfaction. Typically, a flight counts as delayed if it is more than 15 minutes either ahead or behind schedule. The U.S. Department of Transportation\'s (DOT’s) Bureau of Transportation Statistics tracks the on-time performance of domestic flights operated by large air carriers. Summary information on the number of on-time, delayed, canceled, and diverted flights among other key fields is published in DOT\'s monthly Air Travel Consumer Report and in the dataset used in this project for 2015 flight delays and cancelations. The dataset comprising three CSV files namely Flights, Airports and Airlines was made available by Kaggle.com.

The project uses Tableau reporting tool to help prospective travelers find answers to certain pertinent questions that would help them in making decisions about their travel choices and expectations. What were the On-Time departure and arrival measures? What were the airlines cancellation regularity measures? Were there key changes month over month? How did different airlines and airports perform? The project provides travelers with an interactive dashboard they can slice and dice on different metrics to answer these questions and more. Problem Statement

Thousands of Americans experience delayed or cancelled flights each year as airlines and airports in the US struggle with surging demand, seasonal storms, smoke from wildfires, worker shortages and mechanical failures among other causes of flight delays and cancellations. According to U.S. Department of Transportation, on average, airlines delayed 27 percent of flights in June 2019 and cancelled 2 percent. These numbers have significantly increased since the Corona Virus pandemic hit in early 2020.

Next Steps

1. Book a morning or mid-week flight. Afternoon and evening flights usually have the worst on-time performance due to ripple effects from earlier delayed flights. Air traffic is also less busy in the middle of the week making prices, delays and cancellations all lower.
2. Inclement Weather is one of the typical reasons for flight delays and cancellations. It is better to plan flights during better weather days and months.
3. Always check on-time data for your flight before booking. All US airlines are obliged to include on-time data on their websites. You can also use my “2015 US Flight Delays and Cancellations” Dashboard for a guide on the performance of most major US Airlines.
