Project Overview

Would you like to find out trends of lung cancer in your state between the years of 2003 and 2013? Well, by following this instruction, you will be able to build The Lung Cancer Incident and Mortality Rates in the US (2003-2013) dashboard which will help you identify states with the highest & lowest death rates as well as states with the most and least cases of cancer on a yearly basis. The dashboard also shows mortality and incident rates based on sex, region, and race. The color saturation is based on lung cancer cases per year which ranges from light orange, orange to dark brown. The light orange color indicates low cases of cancer, and the dark brown displays the highest cases. The overall mortality rate is around 4,983.83 % whereas the overall incident rate is 6,707.51 %.

Problem Statement

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the US with 1 in 16 people will be diagnosed in their lifetime. Between 2003 and 2013 the number of people in the US that are diagnosed with lung cancer increased by 6.21%. Study also shows close to 65% of all new cases of lung cancer are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.

Although more lives are lost to lung cancer than any other cancer, only 6% of federal government dollar spent on cancer research are spent on lung cancer research. The main purpose of this project is to create a dashboard that helps health professionals and policy makers to monitor populations most affected by lung cancer, evaluate the success of programs designed to prevent cancer and diagnose cancer at early stages.

Next Steps

1: More fund for lung cancer research is needed to find preventive measures, better screening techniques and advanced treatments for cancer patients. Although the lung cancer incident rates increased by 6.21% between 2003 and 2013, the mortality rate decreased by 10.3% due to advanced drugs and therapies, reduced smoking rates and early screening.
2: Affordable health care for all will encourage everyone to do a regular checkup and increases the chance that cancer cases would get caught at the early stage to receive effective and lifesaving treatments.
3: Maintaining healthy lifestyle including diet, exercise and avoiding smoking habits might lower the chances of getting lung cancer.
