Project Overview

The U.S Agency for Development, USAID, is the world’s leading international development agency that provides development assistance to help countries on their growth journey to self-reliance. The agency looks at ways to help lift lives, build communities, and establish self-sufficiency. This project demonstrates how to design a data warehouse utilizing supply chain health commodity shipment and pricing data from USAID from 2006 to 2015. The data specifically identifies Anti-Retroviral (ARV) and HIV lab shipments to supported countries and it provides the commodity pricing and associated supply chain expenses necessary to move the commodities to these supported countries for use. This data is utilized alongside data on countries and continents and the ISO codes.

Problem Statement

Customer expectations and delivery requirements are very important aspects that every business needs to consider. A case of poor On-Time-Delivery performance affects more than just the customer. It is usually an indicator of poor production efficiency and materials handling procedures. In the 2020 MHI Annual Industry Report, 4 of the top 6 company challenges relate to higher customer expectations and faster delivery including customer demands for lower cost (51%), customer demands on response times (48%), rising customer service expectations (47%), and customer demands for customization (41%).

In addition, countries with highly developed supply chain infrastructure such as modern interstate highway systems, vast railroad networks, numerous modern ports, and airports, can exchange many goods between businesses and consumers quickly and at a low cost. For instance, it is estimated that supply chain costs make up 20% of a product’s cost in the U.S. but 40% of a product’s cost in China. If transport damage is added in, these costs make up 60% of a product’s cost in China, which impacts the standard of living of its citizens. Thus, a strong need to develop infrastructure.
