City of Austin Affordable Housing Inventory

Project Overview

Summary: The City of Austin Affordable Housing Inventory (AHI) includes all income-restricted affordable units in developments funded through the Housing Development Assistance Programs and incentivized through Development Incentive Programs that are currently affordable. Projects within the AHI have either already been completed or are currently being developed. No warranty is made by the City of Austin regarding the specific accuracy or completeness of this dataset. The reasons for a lack of affordability vary from city to city, but commonly include housing costs rising faster than incomes, supply of houses not keeping up with demand, scarcity of land, and demographic changes such as population growth, ageing and changes in household composition. This project is aiming to automate the (ETL) Extracting, transforming and analysis of the data to drive different KPI’s that will help the corporation focus more on decision making and better administration and monitoring.

Problem Statement

Problem Statement: Affordable housing is defined in terms of multiples of the median income. For instance, if the median income of an area is $100 whereas the median home price in that same area is $400, the ratio is 4:1. A housing unit is said to be affordable when this ratio is less than 5. In most important cities of the world, it has now become impossible to find housing units where the ratio is less than 5. In most cases, the ratio is between 7 to 10, which means that the housing unit is severely unaffordable.
